Testing was carried out to the rear of and within the basement carpark on this site between 2 and 9 December 2000 in accordance with planning requirements. The development was to extend the current carpark (OD 17m). The existing basement is to be retained. The site covers 3800m2, measuring 190m north–south by 20m. Three 7m-by-1m trenches were excavated in the basement carpark.
Trench 1 was situated at the southern end of the site; Trench 2 was at the northern; and Trench 3 was located between the two. Their depths ranged from 1.1m to 1.6m. The subsoil consisted of an extremely compact, friable, yellow soil with very high limestone content. Its depth did not discriminate between trenches, but tended to undulate throughout. Nothing of an archaeological nature was revealed, either structural or artefactual.
