Test excavation in advance of a development in Fumbally Lane was requested because of the presence of the River Poddle running along the north-west boundary of the site. Fifteen test-trenches were opened, and in thirteen of the trenches archaeological deposits of predominantly 18th/19th-century date were uncovered. Most of the trenches produced animal bones, or scraps of leather, though a small quantity of medieval pottery was recovered in four of the trenches. The pottery was found in silt layers mixed with 18th/19th-century pottery.

The archaeology on the site suggests some sort of industrial activity, possibly tanning, skinning, dyeing or soap-making, along the banks of the River Poddle during the 18th/19th century. However, the retrieval, albeit limited, of medieval pottery among the later deposits suggests at least a small-scale presence on the site of archaeological activity from a much earlier date.
