Previous assessment had been undertaken on this site in 1997 by Georgina Scally (Excavations 1997, 44, 97E0077). Medieval deposits remained on the street front of No. 97, while basements of post-medieval date had removed the deposits on the two adjacent plots, which formed part of the development.
An excavation of the medieval deposits took place over a week in January 2000. A metalled area adjacent to Francis Street, of 13th-century date, may indicate the original road surface. It was resurfaced in the medieval period. The roadway was cut through by later gullies. A range of medieval finds, mainly ceramic, was recovered from the soils.
