An archaeological assessment was requested by the Dublin City Archaeologist in advance of granting a planning decision, to ascertain the location and nature of the uppermost levels of archaeological material on the site. The assessment was based on the hand-excavation of eight test-pits at basement level. All of the pits measured c. 1m x 1m.
Archaeological deposits were identified in all eight of the test-pits at a depth of 0.3m below the basement floor, 4.5m OD. The deposits consisted of yellow and beige clays with grey-brown clay/organic mixes. Animal bone, crushed shells, and charcoal flecks were identifiable within these deposits. No artefacts that would indicate date were retrieved. However, the similarity of the material with that found at 5–7 Upper Exchange Street by Georgina Scally (Excavations 1993, 24–5, 93E0143) and on the western side of the street by Linzi Simpson (Excavations 1997, 41–2, 96E0245) indicates that the deposits are probably of pre-Norman, late Viking date. The level to which the deposits survive, when compared with the evidence from 5–7 Upper Exchange Street, suggests that there may be a depth of up to 2m of archaeological deposits surviving beneath the basement floor.
