The line of the road linking the Coombe to Dolphin’s Barn is being altered and widened. Archaeological assessment of the sites then available was undertaken in 1993 (Excavations 1993, 19–20). Further assessment, monitoring and excavation took place in 2000 and will continue into 2001.
The assessment of the area of the road fronting onto Weaver’s Street was undertaken in March 2000. This revealed that only early 18th- and 19th-century and later buildings survived on the site. A line of 18th-century wooden water pipes was noted and subsequently excavated in April 2000. The mechanical stripping of the area was monitored in September and October 2000, and nothing of significance was noted.
The area to the west of Brabazon Row and the south of Ardee Row was assessed in November 2000. This revealed the survival of an early 19th-century clay pipe production site behind the small houses that fronted onto the west side of Brabazon Row. This area was excavated between November 2000 and January 2001. Part of an early 19th-century clay pipe kiln was revealed, as were extensive dumps of waste pipes and kiln furniture.
Further assessment and excavation will be undertaken in 2001 on the proposed road line.
