Five test-trenches were opened in the yard of Maguire and Patterson’s, on the northern side of Hammond Lane. The proposed route of the LUAS Scheme crosses this plot of land, alongside the Law Library, to form a new street linking Bow Street to Church Street.
In each test-trench garden soils were revealed over river gravels, with medieval pottery being recovered at the lowest levels, around 2.5m from the modern surface. A number of post-medieval and later walls were encountered. The site will be fully excavated prior to construction in 2001.
