Archaeological testing and monitoring were undertaken at the above site, the testing commencing in early January, while the monitoring took place over three months, from March to May.
The purpose of the testing was to determine the impact that the proposed development may have on any archaeological remains, as the site is located within an area of high archaeological potential. One of the principal concerns was the possibility of recovering burials associated with the neighbouring Meeting House (RMP 18:020533).
The programme did not reveal any archaeological features or deposits. In the eastern half of the site the existing basement had been cut deep into natural deposits, while the stratigraphy of the western half of the site was consistent with that of the previous buildings and tenements upon which the present structure had been constructed. It appears that the soil horizon located beneath this layer reflects the original pastureland.
The monitoring programme did not reveal any further archaeological material or features.
