Monitoring was required of the excavation of three foundation trenches for a link building at the north-western corner of Clarke Square. The potential for the recovery of barrack walls in this area was high, as a section joining the north and west blocks of the barracks had been demolished c. 1890. The greater portion of this site was disturbed by modern services. However, sections of two mortared walls survived. Feature 1 (measuring 2.7m in length x 1.25m in width x 1.3m in height) and Feature 2 (measuring 2.65m in length x 1.25m in width x 1.2m in height) were in line with the arch and the southern face of the north block of the barracks. No artefactual material was recovered. There can be no doubt that these walls represent the surviving portion of the continuation of the southern face of the original north range of what had been Palatine Square.
