Test excavation was undertaken in April 2000. All trenches were excavated with a 1.5m-wide, toothed bucket. Foundations of 18th- and 19th-century buildings were located. Brown silts of late 17th/18th-century date were present in limited areas not built on. Naturally deposited Liffey mud underlay the silts. The site in the medieval period was on the Liffey foreshore, an alluvial strand with no habitation closeby. On the evidence of this assessment, this situation continued up to as late as the 18th century.
