Monitoring of groundworks at Meánscoil Iognaid Rís (St Mary’s CBS), Longmile Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12, took place for 20 days between February and May 2000, in response to a planning condition. The development included an extension to the rear of the existing school building, a carpark at the front of the school and a surfaced court at the rear of the gym. The site is located immediately south-west of Drimnagh Castle and is partially within the zone of potential around the castle as shown on the RMP constraint maps. An archaeological assessment carried out by James Eogan in May 1998 (Excavations 1998, 43–4) revealed limited archaeological remains in the form of a stone-surfaced trackway of 17th- to 18th-century date.
No archaeological remains were uncovered during the topsoil-stripping before constructing the carpark or surfaced court. The groundworks for the extension to the school initially involved the breaking up and removal of the concrete schoolyard. The latest deposit beneath this concrete yard was modern fill consisting of stones, red bricks, metal fragments, glass fragments and modern crockery. Further groundworks involved the excavation of a number of new manholes with pipe-trenches between them and the excavation of narrow trenches for the building foundations. No further ground reduction was carried out. No substantial archaeological remains were uncovered during the monitoring of these groundworks.
