A series of test-trenches was mechanically excavated over the footprint of proposed student accommodation in the grounds of Trinity Hall, within the supposed general area of the site of Rathmines Castle.

A previously undertaken EIS identified SMR 22:87 in the north-eastern corner of the site. This is the site of the castle of Rathmines, which was demolished sometime between the first and second editions of the OS maps (between 1837–43 and 1864). Despite the contradictory nature of the historical references as to the exact location of the castle, this is the location upon which most of the authorities agree and to which the Heritage Service has assigned the SMR number. Although the location of the SMR designation of the castle is to be left undeveloped, therefore preserving any remains in situ, boreholes monitored by Finn Delaney (99M0002) recorded cobbling in two locations to the west of the castle site, which are of possible archaeological significance.

No deposits of archaeological significance were located in the test-trenches. Any activity recorded related to landscaping work, which appears to have been carried out in the 19th century.
