An archaeological impact assessment based on test excavations was requested in advance of the submission of a planning application for this site. Development works are proposed for the grounds of Crumlin House, which was built at the start of the 18th century.
Three trenches were excavated, positioned near the proposed structures. Trench 1 was 7.7m long, 1.2m wide and 0.87m deep. Trench 2 was 6m long, 1.15m wide and 0.5m deep. Trench 3 was 14m long, 1m wide and 0.4m deep. Three pits were identified in Trench 3, one of which exhibited extensive in situ burning. The second pit produced oyster shells and bone fragments. The remaining pit was subcircular in plan and contained numerous inclusions of mortar, bone and post-medieval pottery. The presence of post-medieval pottery within this pit may be taken to indicate that the others are also of post-medieval date. The post-medieval date of the features indicates that the pits are associated with the activities of Crumlin House.
