An archaeological assessment was carried out on the site of a proposed residential development at St Laurence Road, Chapelizod, Dublin 20, on 19 September 2000.
Three test-trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed development. A layer of 20th-century clay containing broken china, glass and metal was exposed in both Trenches 1 and 2 below a layer of modern hardcore and rubble. This layer lay directly above the natural, orange boulder clay. A number of concrete walls and sewers had been cut into the clay layer and were clearly associated with the warehouse. Trench 3 was excavated in the yard area to the east of the warehouse. The natural boulder clay was exposed directly below the tarmac and hardcore yard surface.
No archaeological deposits or features were exposed, and all the finds recovered were 19th– 20th-century in date. No further work is required for the proposed development to proceed as planned.
