Archaeological mitigation was required at this proposed development site because of its close proximity to a known archaeological site, SMR 49:20. The site consisted of an irregular elongated area of about 1.5 acres between Shimna Integrated College and the houses fronting Main Street, Newcastle. The northern end of the site sloped gradually down from south to north and lay below a bank separating the site from one of the college’s playing fields. A culverted stream formed part of the southern boundary of this part of the site. The area under development was dotted with trees, most of which would be retained. The southern portion was steeper, sloped from west to east and was bounded by a lane to the south and a road to the west. The monitoring of the topsoil-stripping took place over three days in late December 2000. Cutting and removal of some trees had already taken place.
