Monitoring of construction works in the harbour area of Killyleagh, Co. Down, was undertaken during 2000. An intertidal survey carried out in late 1999 revealed nothing of archaeological importance in the area, but a picture map by Raven, dated to 1625, indicated that 17th-century quay structures existed in the area. This area was reclaimed and built up during the historic past, and consequently monitoring of ground reduction was required.
The monitoring consisted of attendance during excavations of service trenches. In all of the trenches monitored, modern and post-medieval build-up was found to directly overlie naturally occurring subsoil. No evidence of the 17th-century quay structures was identified.
Phase II of the project will commence in the summer of 2001. Archaeological attendance during this phase of construction will continue.
