Monitoring of the rebuilding of a perimeter wall around the Fountain Estate in Derry was undertaken in early 2000. The estate is located immediately outside of the Derry City walls, fronting onto both Bishop’s Street Without and Upper Bennett Street, in an area previously occupied by the post-medieval city jail. One of the jail towers is preserved on the site at the Bishop’s Street Without side. Where possible, efforts were made to build on the pre-existing wall foundations. Only along part of Upper Bennett Street was this not possible. Here a small section of a stone wall was uncovered, which has been identified as part of the perimeter wall of the city jail. Nothing else of archaeological significance was identified.
