Testing was carried out at this site in advance of development as recommended by an archaeological assessment carried out in March 2000. The medieval walled city of Cork lies across the river some 500m to the north-west, and the Benedictine priory of St John the Evangelist is sited by the Urban Archaeological Survey in an area directly to the north of the site.
On 7 July 2000 one mechanically excavated test-trench was opened, which ran roughly east–west along the centre of the site. The trench was c. 2m deep and 1.5m wide. A stone-lined drain was noted in the west end of the trench. This did not contain any diagnostic pottery or levels.
No finds, features or levels of archaeological value or that could be associated with the Benedictine priory were identified. It was recommended that further archaeological testing around the edges of the site should be carried out when it is clear of buildings.
