The site of the Sisters of Mercy diocesan offices is located on Bishop Street, near St Fin Barre’s Cathedral in Cork City. Plans to refurbish the offices involved the removal of up to 1m of material from the base of the lower floor of the building. The site is located within the zone of archaeological potential of the historic town as defined by the Record of Monuments and Places and was the subject of planning conditions relating to the archaeological resources of the site.
The area to be monitored was c. 12m north–south x 32m east–west. No features of archaeological significance were uncovered over much of this area. The partial remains of a stone wall uncovered at the east end of the site were recorded and left in situ.
