Monitoring was carried out during the topsoil removal along the planned route of the Bord Gáis Éireann pipeline extension from Ballincollig to Ballineen, a distance of approximately 38km. The Ballincollig to Ballineen Pipeline is a planned extension of the existing 70-bar natural gas network intended to reinforce the existing distribution systems in Cork City and to allow for future extensions into West Cork. In total, monitoring was carried out over an area of 687,600m2 (68.8ha); 147,000m3 of topsoil was stripped.

In the course of monitoring from the River Brinny, nineteen possible sites were identified. Thirteen fulachta fiadh were recorded, nine of which were excavated under separate licences. The remaining fulachta fiadh only partially extended onto the pipeline corridor and were tested and recorded during the monitoring process. Two of these sites were destroyed after the stripping. The other six sites were mainly anomalies that were examined and recorded after the stripping was completed. One of these sites required a licence and is subject to a separate report.
