Site AR28 consisted of two separate platforms with a possible standing stone, in the north-west corner of a marginal field in the townland of Killulla, Co. Clare. It was identified as a site of archaeological potential during an environmental impact assessment, in advance of the N18/N19 Road Improvement Scheme, from Ballycasey to Dromoland (O Rahilly 1995, 11) The site lies within the take of the proposed road, and therefore further archaeological investigation was warranted. Testing was carried out between 6 and 12 June 2000.
The site comprised a raised platform area with a second platform (and associated standing stone) approximately 50m to the south. Two test-trenches were inserted, one across each platform area. Test-trench 1 measured 10m by 1.5m and ran in an east–west direction across the eastern end of Platform 1, as identified by the locational survey. Test-trench 2 measured 10m by 1.5m and ran in an east–west direction across Platform 2 and its associated standing stone. Both trenches were excavated manually down to natural subsoil. Testing failed to reveal any features of archaeological significance. The ‘standing stone’ was deemed to have been a glacial deposition, slightly disturbed from its original position. The only finds were a fragment of iron and an iron nail. Both were found in the topsoil. Archaeological monitoring of topsoil-stripping was recommended as part of the general monitoring recommendations for the project.
