Trial-testing took place in Main Street, Kilfenora, Co. Clare, during March 2000 to establish the impact of the proposed development of the Burren Display Centre on the archaeology of the site. A survey of upstanding remains also took place. The site is very close to the cathedral of Kilfenora and was of importance as an ecclesiastical site from the early medieval period onwards.
The trial-testing was carried out on the basis of ten trenches. In the east half of the site, four of the trenches revealed an organic layer mixed with charcoal and animal bone, and a sherd of medieval pottery was found in one. In the trenches to the west of the site, only homogeneous garden soil was found. It was recommended that mitigation measures should include excavation of archaeological layers.
