An archaeological assessment was carried out on 4 August 2000 on the site of a proposed boathouse in Castle Lane, Belturbet, Co. Cavan. The site of the proposed development is located on the south bank of the River Erne, north of Castle Lane and the Castle Gardens, with an existing slipway to the east.
A single trench measuring 2.2m x 16.5m was excavated east–west in the area of the proposed development to a depth of 2.3m. A thick layer of 19th-century coarse brown clay containing fragments of broken china plates, glass beer bottles and brown-glazed earthenware was exposed below a thin demolition layer of angular stone. This extended to a depth of 2.3m and lay above the natural bedrock and grey marl. No archaeological features were exposed, and consequently no further work is recommended.
