Monitoring was conducted on the site of a proposed housing development of two single-storey detached dwelling-houses, associated driveways and percolation areas in the townland of Donore, approximately 1.5km south-east of Bagnelstown, Co. Carlow. This involved the excavation of two 3.5m-wide and 0.3–0.5m-deep strips in order to facilitate the driveways and further excavations for the house foundations and percolation areas. The areas excavated for the proposed dwellings measured 30m north–south by 35m. The proposed development is located south-east of SMR 16:73 (holy well), 16:76 (enclosure site and possible field system) and 16:74 (Kilmolappogue Church, site of). Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out on 12 and 13 October 2000.
Topsoil and sod was composed of a dark brown clay with frequent small to medium-sized rounded and sub-angular stones and overlay a mixed deposit of sands ranging from grey/white, fine-grained sands to brownish-grey, coarse-grained, sandy silt. This deposit overlay bedrock. Nothing of archaeological significance was observed.
