Test excavation was carried out at the site of a proposed new dwelling on 4 May 2000. The site lies 100m south of ‘Kilmolappoge Church (site of)’ and 200m east of ‘Kilmolappoge Well’, as named on OS maps. A raised subrectangular area (c. 19m east–west by c. 10.5m) indicates the site of the church. The field in which it is situated is known locally as the ‘church meadow’, but nothing is known of the church, suggesting that it fell into disuse at an early period. The Archaeological inventory of County Carlow (OPW, 1996) records that human bones were uncovered in a quarry to the north of the church and reburied nearby.

Four test-trenches were excavated on the footprint of the proposed development. It was known prior to testing that the site had been extensively disturbed by a land drainage scheme in 1987. Six parallel trench cuts, orientated north-west/south-east, were encountered during testing. The cuts, c. 1m wide, were located at 5m intervals, and some contained plastic drainage pipes. No archaeological material was discovered.
