An archaeological assessment was carried out within the area of a proposed housing development close to the Armagh Road, at Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh. Six trenches were excavated by a mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. The first trench ran parallel to Armagh Road for a distance of some 180m. It was kept sufficiently close to Armagh Road to check for the presence of an earlier roadway. Four of the remaining five trenches were excavated perpendicular to the first, running away, south-westwards, from the line of the Armagh Road. The sixth trench was located towards the south end of the development area and was positioned so as to test a particularly wet area of ground.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified within any of the trenches.
