In late November and early December 2000 monitoring was carried out on a site adjacent to the listed Bank of Ireland building on Main Street, Larne, prior to the construction of a new bank and commercial premises. Monitoring was required because the development site was very close to the possible location of the Tchevet tower-house (known from Speed’s map).
The footprint of the building was stripped using a flat bucket. Nothing of any archaeological significance was revealed, and the surface exposed consisted of loose, brown soil mixed with mortar, cement and broken spacer bricks. The only feature revealed was a small area of modern paving. A series of shallow (c. 1.5m) pits was then sunk around the perimeter of the site. None of these revealed any archaeology. The layer of rubble-rich material revealed during stripping lay from 0.3m to 1m in depth, and below this was the brown, clay, sterile subsoil.
There was no archaeology present on this site.
