The site is on the summit of Church Hill and adjacent to St Thomas's Church of Ireland parish church, which stands on the site of the medieval parish church. It is south of the 'Round Mount'; this monument may be an Anglo-Norman motte or a Hiberno-Norse or earlier burial mound. It is within the zone of archaeological potential of Wicklow town. The site is currently a garden. This excavation took place in response to a condition in the grant of planning permission for a dormer bungalow.

Excavations of three trenches by mechanical digger revealed no archaeological features or remains. In each of the trenches sod and topsoil were found to overlie undisturbed, natural subsoil at an average depth of 0.35m. No further archaeological work is required on this site before development.
