A clay-walled vernacular farmstead at Pollwitch, Mayglass, Co. Wexford, is being conserved under funding from the Heritage Council. Most of the buildings on the site pre-date the 1840 Ordnance Survey maps, and the main dwelling-house dates to c. 1700 (O'Reilly et al. 1997). In late 1998 a temporary protective structure was erected over the building. The work was monitored by Cathy Sheehan (Excavations 1998, 217).
The licence was transferred to the writer, to cover excavation beside the north-east gable of the house. It was believed that the house was originally longer at this side. The excavation uncovered evidence of a clay foundation on the line of the south-east wall and a clay-and-post foundation parallel to the existing north-east wall. These were interpreted as the remains of the original walls of the house and served to extend it to the north-east by a maximum of 4m.
