Testing was carried out at Austin Friars Street, Mullingar, in fulfilment of conditions attached to planning permission for a commercial and residential development. The site is within the bounds of the medieval town and close to the position of the Augustinian monastery where a significant number of inhumations were excavated to the south-east of the present site. Previous testing by Deirdre Murphy in 1998 (Excavations 1998, 210) revealed no features of archaeological significance.
Two trenches were excavated running north-south down the length of the site. Both were almost 17m long and 1m wide. Deposits containing 19th-century material were excavated in both trenches to a depth 0.42m and 0.72m below existing ground level. A layer of grey/brown, stony gravel was encountered under these deposits and was completely sterile. This layer was excavated to 1.44m below existing ground level to ensure that it was not redeposited. No archaeological material was recovered.
