An archaeological assessment of a proposed residential dwelling at Castletown Geoghegan, Mullingar, was carried out in August 1999. The site is on the west side of the main street and close to the Anglo-Norman motte and bailey and the site of two castles.
Three trenches were excavated. These exposed natural gravel close to present ground level, and there was no evidence of previous disturbance of the site. No finds of archaeological interest were recovered, and no further excavation was necessary.
