An archaeological assessment of the site at 17 and 18 Broad Street, Waterford, was carried out ahead of a planning application to alter the existing buildings on site and to erect an extension at the rear. The eastern boundary of the site roughly corresponds with the north-south line of the city defences as depicted on Phillips's map of 1673 and found by Joanna Wren during her excavations at 9 Arundel Square (Excavations 1998, 207, 98E0091). The site therefore lies immediately outside the 12th/early 13th-century defences in the area of the clay bank (also recorded by Wren) and ditch.
A building survey, as part of the assessment, identified the standing buildings on site as early 18th-century, incorporating the walls of an earlier stone building and possible medieval timbers (to be tested by dendrochronology).
Remains of the 12th/early 13th-century clay bank and ditch of the city defences were found in three test-trenches at the rear of the site. Limited excavation was carried out to a depth of 9.59m OD. The excavated ditch fills included pottery dating to the 13th-14th century. Post-excavation work is in progress.
