An archaeological impact assessment was sought for planning permission to renovate an existing building and to erect an extension to a property at Rocklow Road, Fethard. A report was prepared on the standing buildings, and a test-trench was excavated in the footprint of the proposed extension.
The test-trench identified a well-preserved cobbled surface 0.3–0.45m below present ground level, probably of 18th/19th-century date. The remains of a wall were identified on the street front, potentially the front wall of a building (with cobbled floor) recorded on an 1840s survey. Cobbles to the south would have surfaced an open yard.
A clay floor identified under the cobbles by the street front is likely to be the original floor of the building. A sherd of bottle glass recovered from the floor suggests a post-medieval date, but considerable root disturbance in the area undermines the reliability of the evidence. A small post-hole identified in a sondage under the floor suggests an earlier generation of buildings on the street.
