An archaeological assessment was required as a planning condition for an extension to the ballroom at the rear of Hearn's Hotel. The site is outside the medieval walled town, in the area of the 17th-century east suburbs. The hotel building has an integral carriageway that previously led to a courtyard where Bianconi established stables and workshops for his coaching enterprise.
A cobbled floor, drain and wall stump were uncovered, the remains of outbuildings around the yard. These overlay a deep garden soil (with no datable finds), over a thin, silty, red/brown soil over gravel. The red/brown soil is likely to be the remains of an earlier (medieval) cultivation soil, although no finds were recovered from the layer.
