The cemetery associated with the women's church—Teampull na mBan—is bordered on the south by a low cliff. Ongoing marine erosion has destroyed the enclosure wall on this side and is gradually encroaching on the cemetery. The exposed section in the cliff face was cleaned and recorded (drawn survey and photography) to assess whether any significant features were immediately threatened.
A shallow loam topsoil (c. 0.4m) was found to overlie compact, sandy till. The topsoil contained a few weathered human bone fragments and a single long bone, but no articulated human remains were exposed and no grave-cuts were identified. The bones were allowed to remain in situ; no other finds occurred, and no samples were taken.
This work was commissioned by Dúchas and undertaken by Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division No further investigation is proposed.
Consolidation of the cliff face may be undertaken by Dúchas at a future date.
