Planning permission was sought for the conversion of a farm building to domestic use, with permission for a septic tank and percolation areas at Calteraun, Gurteen, Co. Sligo. Pre-construction testing was undertaken on 22–4 October 1999, as the proposed development occurs within the constrained area of a souterrain.
Four trenches were opened along the line of the percolation areas, septic tank and service trench. A depth of 0.15–0.2m of topsoil was removed from each trench; lying directly beneath was natural, light reddish/brown sand with small, rounded stone inclusions. This sand was tested to a depth of 2m to establish that it had not been redeposited.
No evidence of archaeology was uncovered in any of these trenches.
