In July 1999 a human skull was discovered on the border of the townlands of Cartron and Corry near Albert Lock, Jamestown Canal, Co. Roscommon.236 The site was inspected by Mary Cahill. The skull was discovered when soil excavated from a new canal cutting was being moved. It was noticed by the digger-driver as it rolled off a large mound of earth. The new canal was being cut along the line of a large drain, which had silted up and become overgrown. The new canal was to be 22m in width and, as it was gradually being widened and extended, the soil from the excavation was continuously being moved back. The depth of the cutting was 3m and the water was 2m deep. Owing to the high water level (2m) it was not possible to examine the cutting. Inspection of the excavated soil produced no other evidence of human bone, although a small quantity of animal bone was noted. Examination of the two OS 6in. sheets shows that the large drain referred to above was not contemporary with the canal and seems to have been constructed during the development of the railway. The purpose of the drain seems to have been to drain a small lake called Black Lough North and an adjoining area of marsh. In so far as can be determined, the skull (1992:32) came from the area originally covered by the lake. The drain now marks the townland boundary between Corry and Cartron townlands (Fredengren, forthcoming).
