An assessment of a proposed commercial development was carried out at Main Street, Roscommon. The site is close to a former church site and to the west of St Comman's Vat. Previous testing on a site less than 100m to the north of the present development revealed nothing of archaeological significance (see No. 775, Excavations 1999).
Two test-trenches were excavated. The first was near the centre of the site, and boulder clay was exposed at a depth of 0.2m below a modern demolition rubble layer. The second trench was excavated further east to the rear of the site. For the most part, modern rubble overlay the boulder clay, which was exposed at a depth of 0.3m below the surface. Upon the removal of the rubble three pits were evident cut into the boulder clay. These were partially excavated and produced finds of 18th–19th-century date. They will not be affected to any significant degree by the proposed development.
