Testing was carried out in connection with the proposed development of a mobile phone antenna, associated container and access road c. 2km south of the town of Boyle, for Eircell Ltd.
Within the area are a number of barrows and enclosures, a mound, a linear feature and two large, subcircular enclosures. The two large enclosures are of the 'earthen embanked enclosure' or 'henge' type, i.e. the bank is composed of material scooped out from the interior of the site. Twenty test-trenches were excavated using a wide, toothless ditching bucket. These trenches were at intervals of 20–30m along the proposed roadway and at the site of the mast and container. They were an average of 3.5m long and 1.9m wide. Each trench was excavated to presumed natural boulder clay or bedrock. In general the topsoil and sod overlay a loose, gravelly, stony band intermixed with a grey, silty sand. This in turn overlay a compact, olive-brown to yellow, silty sand. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during the work. However, given the proximity of the proposed site to a number of archaeological sites, it was proposed that a programme of archaeological monitoring be carried out.
