The proposed development is in the centre of a rich archaeological landscape with Rathcroghan mound as the focal point. The site is c. 75–100m west of Rathmore, a raised rath constructed on top of a natural mound. The proposed development concerned an extension to the rear of the existing building, which is thought to have been built in the early 1920s.
In accordance with the planning condition, pre-development testing in the form of trial-trenches was carried out. Four trenches were mechanically excavated, revealing no evidence of features/ deposits of archaeological significance. The layers present were a brown garden soil overlying the natural.
