Nineteen test-trenches were opened within the confines of an archaeological site, an ecclesiastical enclosure, that will be affected by the proposed realignment of part of the N4 at Ardcarn, Boyle. The results from the testing confirmed that the proposed realignment will have no direct impact on the site. In sixteen of the trenches the bedrock occurred very close to the surface. The remains of a field boundary wall were uncovered in one of the other three trenches, and the last two were sited on linear embankments to determine whether the embankments were of an archaeological nature. In the middle of both trenches, and underlying the topsoil, a drystone capping, two or three courses deep, was uncovered. The stone capping covered a linear embankment consisting of a bank of sterile, sandy clay. In one of the trenches a fragmented clay pipe was found beneath the stone capping. It would appear from the results of the testing that the linear features were the remnants of land clearance.
