A limited excavation was carried out at Cornapaste, Scotshouse, Co. Monaghan, in April 1999 of a possible brushwood surface uncovered during previous testing on the site by Eoghan Moore (Excavations 1998, 170). The proposed development consisted of an extension to an existing sawmills at Cornapaste. Sites in the vicinity include the Black Pig's Dyke, an enclosure, a holy well and a possible ecclesiastical foundation associated with St Patrick.
An area measuring 12m east-west by 16m was excavated in the vicinity of the possible brushwood surface. A peaty layer averaging 0.4–0.6m deep overlay a grey, natural marl that contained the stumps of two trees. These had substantial roots penetrating into the marl and intertwining amongst themselves. They appeared to represent two trees along the edge of the marsh. No other features or finds were recovered from the area excavated.
