The site of the proposed development is in Cormeen, c. 2 miles from Moynalty, close to SMR 5:60, a ringfort known locally as 'Fools Fort', measuring 39m north-south by 37m.
The proposed development consists of a bungalow, garage, septic tank and associated services. A monitoring condition was imposed by Meath County Council. Area 1, consisting of the proposed dwelling, garage and services, was stripped to a depth of 0.5m. Topsoil extended to a depth of 0.34m, below which orange boulder clay was exposed. No features or finds were evident. Area 2 was a long, narrow stretch along the south-west corner of the site in the area of the proposed driveway. Directly inside the existing gate along the west section of the site were the remains of an old shed and yard, below which a layer of manure was visible to a depth of 0.5m, below which the orange boulder clay was exposed. Further east the topsoil extended to a depth of 0.2m and directly overlay orange boulder clay.
Monitoring failed to reveal any archaeological stratigraphy. There is no visual or archaeological impact on the monument, and therefore no further archaeological work is required.
