Mayo County Council wishes to widen the road at a dangerous bend in Streamstown, Westport, Co. Mayo. A strip of land 4m wide is to be acquired for the scheme. The writer had noted a possible archaeological mound adjacent to the area to be acquired. This mound is not a recorded monument.
Pre-development testing of the area to be acquired was undertaken March 1999. Four test-trenches were excavated by hand. Each measured 4m by 2m. No archaeological features or finds were recovered from any of the trenches.
