This site is designated as an enclosure on the 1st edition 6-inch OS map. It is marked as a quarry on the 2nd edition OS map and in the Sites and Monuments Record. The 1984 GSI aerial photograph shows the area as a large quarry. When the site was initially inspected in 1994 the area of the site and a large part of the surrounding ground were an open quarry. Since then, the whole area was backfilled, levelled and reseeded; no surface traces of quarrying or of the archaeological site survived.
Testing was carried out on behalf of Mayo County Council within the area where the enclosure once stood, before the construction of Phase 1 of the KnockâClaremorris Bypass. Three test-trenches were mechanically excavated. The deposits revealed in all three trenches suggested several episodes of quarrying, backfilling and finally levelling.
Topsoil-stripping of the area was monitored during road construction. No archaeological finds or features were revealed on the site.
