A burnt spread of dark brown, charcoal-stained, silty clay was revealed under topsoil and was excavated on 20 July 1999. It measured 0.2m north-south by 0.2m and contained frequent lumps of charcoal and fragments of burnt stone. It filled a roughly circular pit with gently sloping sides that was up to 0.1m deep and had been cut through the light brown, sandy, natural clay. No artefacts were recovered, and a sample is currently being processed for radiocarbon dating.
