Testing of a proposed commercial development on the north side of Roden Place was carried out in April 1999. The site is in an area of archaeological potential as identified in the Urban Archaeology Survey of County Louth.
Following the demolition of existing buildings on the site, two trenches were excavated before development. These revealed the presence of a substantial layer of garden soil over the northern two-thirds of the site, behind existing buildings fronting onto Roden Place. An intensive examination of the deposit produced a single sherd of 13th-century local ware, and there was a complete absence of bone. The natural, grey marl was exposed at depths ranging from 1.1m to 1.3m. From an examination of the plans it was concluded that the proposed development would not impinge to any significant degree on the garden soil.
