An assessment of a proposed residential development at 49 Mary Street, Drogheda, was carried out in November 1999. The site is on the west side of the street, just outside the line of the medieval town wall. Mary Street was constructed c. 1810, at which time the town wall was demolished and the new road was excavated into the side of the hill.
The site was cleared of houses, and immediately the boulder clay was visible over most of the site. A trench 30m long and 2m wide was excavated north-south along the centre of the proposed development site. It failed to reveal any evidence of archaeological stratigraphy, and, as boulder clay was visible elsewhere on the site, it was clear that the proposed development would not have any archaeological impact.
