Monitoring of the construction of a small extension and new entranceway at the Star and Crescent Centre, Fairgreen, Drogheda, was conducted in August 1999 to fulfil a requirement of the planning permission. Six narrow trenches were excavated by machine along the lines of the proposed foundations to an average depth of 1.4m. In all of the trenches the natural sand was exposed at an average depth of 0.8m below a spread of modern, brown clay. A number of stone and brick walls uncovered to the south-west of the site were also post-medieval in date.
It was clear that no archaeological stratigraphy existed on the site and that the brown clay exposed consisted of a modern, redeposited clay above the natural sand. The variety of finds from the site, ranging in date from the late medieval to the late 20th century, confirm that the area was heavily disturbed in the recent past, possibly during the construction of the current Star and Crescent Centre.
