An assessment was carried out on a proposed two-storey extension at 1 Bolton Street/Square, Drogheda. The site is just inside the north-west angle of the medieval town wall. One trench was excavated by machine along the western wall of the proposed development. A dark brown layer containing stone was exposed below the topsoil at an average depth of 0.45m. This layer contained a number of 19th-century pottery sherds and clay pipe fragments and probably represents a layer of demolition material that was spread over the site to raise the ground level. This in turn overlay the natural, orange boulder clay at an average depth of 0.95m. No archaeological features or deposits were uncovered.
