An assessment of a proposed commercial development involving the demolition of an existing shop unit and the construction of a new one was carried out at Bolton Street, Drogheda, Co. Louth. The site is on the west side of Bolton Street, inside the medieval town of Drogheda, close to the western line of the town wall. This area was probably not extensively settled during the medieval period.

Two trenches were excavated following the removal of a concrete floor. A thick layer of garden soil was evident in the trenches and directly overlay the subsoil, which was exposed at an average depth of 1m. There was no evidence of archaeological stratigraphy in the excavated trenches, and it was clear that this site was the back garden of a house fronting onto Bolton Street.
